We love weekend getaways and we love magical places. You know that we’re constantly looking for magical, charming spots that have that “something” about them. Sometimes they’re tiny, with a few rooms and home cooking. Sometimes they’re a little more impressive when it comes to their size, but still magnetising because of their incredible location, great food or attitude towards children. You’re constantly asking us about such places. Where to go? What do we recommend? What can you do when you have a weekend for two? What to do to relax with a friend in a SPA and what to do when you want to relax with two kids? What to do in Mazury, in the mountains and in Wielkopolska? We’re not always able to advise, but we always try our hardest. Since we always recommend what we checked ourselves, our possibilities are a little limited 🙂
I would love to go on a huge tour across Poland and create a full list of all magical places in each region, but we have three other companies outside of our blog that need us and a whole lot of fascinating places in the whole world, not just in Poland. Therefore, we share our experiences with you and what you may need to know 🙂 And remember, 12 verified places are worth way more than 30 spots described based on the info you can find on the internet 😉
Colder days and uglier months are awaiting us. It’s not a reason to stay in, though! If you can’t go to the Canaries, Thailand or Bali, you can always stay in Poland:)
12 MAGICAL PLACES FOR FALL AND WINTER:
There’s a reason Tatarska Jurta is number one on this list. We spent two weeks there, both in February – which, in theory, is the worst month for traveling, cause it’s cold, it’s ugly, it’s snowy. Tatarska Jurta is amazing even in such weather, because you can carelessly eat Tatar treats including pierekaczewnik, potato cake and sweet mantamy with cheese, you can spend hours eating huge breakfast and drinking hot tea, you can eat local cakes and cookies while kids go through boxes with toys and, of course, you can bask in the amazing winter climate of Kruszyniany – go to the mosque, the cementary, drive around the neighbourhood, meet European bisons and go to Supraśl. HERE you can see Kruszyniany covered in snow and HERE you will read more about Tatar cuisine.
We love going back to Kazimierz and we’re there at least once a year. In summer it’s usually crowded and it’s difficult to move both by the Vistula River and on the main square. In fall and winter, Kazimierz shows its second face – it’s peaceful, empty, and sometimes it gets so quiet that the only things you can hear while walking down the street are your voice and snow crunching under your feet. Kazimierz looks amazing when covered in snow and there’s no other place as cozy to live in as Vincent Guest House – I have written about it before, for example HERE. I love every detail of it, I love its climatic, various rooms and great food in their Kuchnia i Wino restaurant. I can’t even tell you how many times we’ve come here, but I know we spent birthdays of Łukasz, his father and me in here and this is where Maks went on his first trip ever at the age of three weeks 🙂 If you come here in winter, you need to go for a walk through surrounding gorges and for chocolate in Cafe Faktoria, nearby Vincent.
3) Kwaśne Jabłko – Włodowo (near Olsztyn)
I was a little hesitant about Kwaśne Jabłko being a place for fall or winter… Is there anything that you could do there? Does it make sense? But then I was reminded of the weekend we spent there… It was April, it was cold and ugly and yet it was one of the nicest weekends of this year for us. Kwaśne Jabłko is beautiful in every inch. Nice rooms where you can read good books, dining room where you just want to be and talk and a climatic room (dayroom?) where you can spend time with others or on your own, drink their local cider or incredible apple juices. Once you’re fully relaxed and full with their homemade food (amazing breakfasts!), you can always go for a walk though the neighbourhood or a little sightseeing session in Olsztyn.
4) Poziom 511 Design Hotel & SPA – Ogrodzieniec, Polish Jurassic Highland
Poziom 511 falls into a different category – compared to the previous places, it’s a huge hotel, but it deserves to be on this list, especially since Polish Jurassic Highland is a good idea for fall itself. Incredible location amongst stones, right next to Ogrodzieniec Castle, pretty big swimming pool (for kids it’s 100% fun!), SPA (for a trip for two or with a friend) and very good food by Oliwia Bernada – you need to try their steak tartare and żurek with porcini mushrooms, lamb sausage and quail egg – perfection!
5) Villa 11 Folk & Design – Zakopane
Zakopane is the destination we love both in fall – cause walking in the valleys is amazing when you’re not surrounded by crowds of tourists – and winter – cause Zakopane looks beautiful while covered in snow, cause its surrounding valleys look even more beautiful, because you can go skiing or just walking, take part in sleigh party ad enjoy the season. Villa 11 Folk & Design is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in Zakopane – delicate, stylish design mixing Goral folklore with modernity and other great elements. Add all these old wooden skis thrown around here and there to that… Localisation? It’s very close to the town center, but when you look to its other side, you’ll see the mountains. Perfect! P.S. Once you decide to go to Zakopane, you can look for places worth eating in right HERE!
6) Siedlisko Sobibór – Sobibór, near Włodawa (East, right next to the border with Belarus)
Siedlisko is without a doubt one of the most charming places we’ve ever been to, and every house and room has its own personality. Although in fall and winter you can’t go kayaking – it’s the main attraction of that place – you can still take long walks and get lazy in Siedlisko – by the fireplace, in sauna or in your house in the tree (we wrote about these fairy tale houses in the trees HERE)… or eating local treats.
Hotel dr Irena Eris in Krynica Zdrój is for those who don’t necesarilly look for a cozy, charming places, but for those who want a little bit (or a little bit more than that ;)) more luxury. All dr Irena Eris hotels are great – every detail is on key, they have great service, good food, attractions for kids and they make sure that parents get some rest too – they have corners for children in their restaurants, menu for kids, playrooms with baby sitters (you can read more about it being a child-friendly hotel HERE). That hotel in Krynica Zdrój is also amazingly located – there’s a chairlift to Jaworzyna Krynicka right next to it, wooden Orthodox churches of Beskid Sądecki are nearby – go HERE. And if you feel like doing nothing, you can spend all day by the swimming pool or in SPA 🙂
8) Dwór Zaścianek – Podlasie
Dwór Zaścianek is one of those places that are not that far from Warsaw and where you can go anytime. It’s a beautiful manor house located in a beautiful garden, friendly owners and a whoooole lot of activities that they organize. You should go to their website and see what happens and when, because they organie bicycle weekends and foodies and cooking lovers weekends – right now it’s apple weekend with apple picking and cooking meals with apples being the main theme. During one of these themed weekend (cherries!) we fell in love with that place. The neighbourhood is great for walks or riding bikes in the fall. Themed weekends are also great if you go there with kids – they’re usually very happy about them!
9) Sioło Budy – Białowieża
Białowieża, Hajnówka, Białowieża Forest – another cool destination, no matter the weather. Walking through the neighbourhood, bison reserve, magical place connected with Eastern Orthodox Church (Krynoczka) and delicious, interesting cuisine. Sioło Budy is a place with charming but simple houses. There are no luxuries inside, just average rooms. It’s not as awesome as Kwaśne Jabłko or Siedlisko Sobibór, but they serve delicious breakfasts, an interesting antique building museum and Karczma Osocznika are very close – you can eat treats like varenyky, meat or potato blood sausage, solyanka, potato cake or delicious sweet haluski with cream in there. You can read about more places worth seeing in the neighbourhood HERE.
10) Galiny Palace and Manor – near Olsztyn
Great place in every season! I guess it’s the only one on this list that doesn’t have a full review on our blog because we went there to… take a break from blogging 😉 We also took a break from writing, taking pictures, adding new posts, but we just had to do something (this is our nature) and we need to share it with you 🙂 It’s a big, but still very nice complex. Attractions for kids, you can learn how to ride horses there, and there’s also a lot of walking and bike lanes.
11) Hotel Carpatia Bieszczadzki Gościniec – Cisna, Bieszczady Mountains
Carpatia Hotel is a place for those who feel like going to Bieszczady Mountains in fall or winter. It may not be our number 1, but if you want to go to Bieszczady in fall or winter, it’s pretty good. Beautifully located, a lot of walking lanes in the neighbourhood, a mountain view, good cuisine (I hope they haven’t lost it!), nice rooms and a playroom for kids. And what else can you do in Bieszczady Mountains other than climbing them and where to take your kids? Go HERE to find out. And you have to go to Ursa Maior – beer production plant for beer.
And again, a little bit of luxury from Irena Eris. I won’t repeat myself – another great, child-friendly hotl with super service, good food, SPA and a swimming pool. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the whole weekend without ever leaving the building and you’ll still come home relaxed. You can also take a warm jacket with you and rent some sleighs or walk around the neighbourhood. It’s perfect both for those who need to relax in SPA or for a family trip.
That’s a lot! Uff! Various places, various regions, various styles and various possibilities. All of them are cool both in fall and in winter. All of them we’ve checked ourselves. You shouldn’t spend all your weekends at home, even when the weather is bad. And us? I feel that we will come back to you with new places checked by the four of us soon 🙂
