We got to Brasserie Warszawska quite accidentally. We had no plans for lunch, no plans at all to be honest. Usually in such situation we go to places we know that are much more ordinary and casual than Brasserie Warszawska. But this time this grim weather made us want to go and try something new and special…

Brasserie Warszawska is located on ul. Górnośląska 24, near the Parliament. A place that’s perfect after a Sunday walk through Łazienki or for a romantic dinner. French cuisine rules here but that’s not all… On one hand we went for French classics such as onion soup, foie gras or tart tatin but on the other we had some more original propositions Brasserie had in store.

When it comes to starters you can have oysters, Bourgogne snails or a double baked soufflé with gruyere cheese, mushrooms and rucola. As we go through the menu, we start feeling a bit like we’re in Paris. I go for a French onion soup with toasts and Gruyere (PLN 22) – a classic! Łukasz gets stewed leeks with black truffle and hardboiled egg (PLN 36).

Foie Gras parfait with russet apple chutney and a brioche is also tempting (PLN 32). Same goes for fried foie gras with caramelised apple, tarragon and brioche (PLN 54), but foie gras is going to be one of the key players in the main course section.

When it comes to starters the onion soup (PLN 22) is an absolute winner. Fragrant, filling, perfect! The toasts are soft and melty thanks to the hot soup, the Gruyere flavour is distinct and the onion broth is delicious! A strong but pleasant flavour. If you want to have a soup like the French do, don’t wait a minute! The leeks are not so good, because the flavours don’t go that well together even though the idea is intriguing. And it’s a really tough meal to cope with – the leeks are fibrous which makes them difficult to cut. They don’t taste perfect either.

As for main courses you can choose from steaks, duck ,fish or burgers. The menu in this section is quite simple and straightforward. More appealing to meateaters, steak and… burger fans! And that’s exactly what Łukasz decides to take – Brasserie Royal Burger with fried Foie Gras (PLN 55). I go for a baked cod (it happens to be the Norwegian skrei during our visit) with black Beluga lentils, Pak Choi and fresh herbs (PLN 68).

Both meals are perfect – Łukasz eats his foie gras burger, brags about it and purrs with delight. The cooking level may not be exactly the one he wanted (medium rare), but the combination of beef and foie gras works perfectly! You can sense the quality of chopped mat and the foie gras is just like Łukasz likes it – a bit fried but delicate inside. I like my cod with crispy skin similar to rosti and subtly Asian lentils. The baked parsleys (PLN 10) are our least favourite. Łukasz orders them to go with his burger instead of the fries. Like the leeks they’re a bit tough and fibrous. But that’s just the side, the mains are great! It may be a sign too – you eat burgers with fries, not parsley!!! 🙂

In the end, after such a lunch we have to order the dessert. I go for a classic once again – tart tatin with vanilla ice cream (PLN 24). Lately, during our Asian vacation I read a book about sweets from Paris and I learned that it was baked by two sisters who once forgot to put the dough to the bottom of the form – in order to save the cake, they covered it with dough on top and then flipped the pie. After reading that I eat tart tatin even more. Another perfect shot! Thin slices of deliciously soft and sweet apples, vanilla ice cream and a nicely crispy crumble. Delicious!

Łukasz gets a chocolate delicacy from white and dark chocolate with pistachio ice cream and chocolate covered ice cream (PLN 25) but it turns out to be something between a cake and a chocolate mousse. Worth a try but not a must. Tart tatin is a much better choice. It’s a pity we didn’t take crème brulee – must try it next time.

We left Brasserie so full that I did not eat anything until the evening, even though it was 3 pm! After this sacrifice I learned one thing – It’s really worth going to Brasserie Warszawska. You will feel real France there, you’ll eat a perfect onion soup, a great burger with foie gras, you’ll get amazed by desserts and feel a nice vibe for a calm lunch (they have lunch offer too), a romantic dinner, a business lunch or a family reunion and celebration. Worth it! Really!
