Holidays are coming to an end. On last weekend we found ourselves by the Polish seaside. We try to come here every year, at least for a moment since we prefer further destinations for longer trips. We prefer new places, new experiences, different cuisine, and guaranteed weather. But still, Polish sea has its own charm. Positive… and negative at the same time. Positive thanks to beautiful and wide beaches, soft and bright sand, bushy dunes, beautiful Baltic sea, unforgettable waffles that always remind me of my childhood, tiny shops with everything and nothing in it that remind me of the times that have passed and will never come back. The negative “charm” is mainly associated with the food. Fish that are freezed, badly prepared, battered in tonnes of flour and drowned in oil, fried too long, burned… and expensive at the same time! The staff that does not give a damn about you because you are just one of many tourists who won’t stop coming! Low standards everywhere, no desire to change anything, ripping customers off… there’s too much of such places in seaside resorts…

Therefore, every time w come to Polish seaside, we look for authentic places that label themselves “fish bars” and don’t sell kebabs, pork chops, pastas and pizzas at the same time. This time, two guys who we culinarily trust, recommended Złota Wydma in Międzyzdroje. We left on bikes – it was 22 km from our hotel Marena Spa in Międzywodzie. 22 km of hills and hard work so we can eat our beloved fish. 22 km that I was supposed to ride both ways, not one! (I always new, all men are pigs!).

We made it! Złota Wydma is located in Międzyzdroje in the Fishermen’s Base located on one of the seaside dunes. You can reach it on foot walking the footpath from the city centre, by beach or, if you’re coming from Międzywodzie lie we did, turn right, towards the sea as soon as you see the “Międzyzdroje” sign post – just follow the “Baza Rybacka” sign. There, you will find plenty of fish bars, you will smell smoked fish and try some delicious things. Baza Rybacka does not look too charming – large ad banners spoil the landscape, but we’re hoping for the food to make it up for us.

smoked fish in Baza Rybacka – smells so good!

Złota Wydma is so good that on Saturday, we ate there twice!. We returned for dinner after a delicious lunch, 22m one way, fortunately this time by car! The fish was perfect – fried, but not burned, melting in your mouth, with just enough of batter. In the beginning the staff told us which fish are fresh and which are defrosted. Honest place, no fooling. They also have a pleasant garden, where you can eat looking at the Baltic sea and fishermen’s boats instead of questionable trendiness of seaside resorts, represented mainly by old German ladies acting like they were 18! Here, it’s calm, the fish scent is in the air and the cats walk among the tables.

Złota Wydmahas been in Międzyzdroje for the last 14 years. It’s a family business and that’s the kind of places we like the most. For years, they used to serve exclusively fish that they caught themselves. A few years ago they gave up on fishing and started ordering fish from trusted fishermen from Międzywodzie, Międzyzdroje and Dziwnów. And they know what they’re doing. If you ask them when is the best time for flounder, cod or turbot, they’ll tell you. No lies that the flounder is best right now when in reality it’s the best and the biggest in October. Just honesty. Menu includes European perch, mackerel icefish, turbot, cod, salmon, flounder, halibut, zander, herring, traditional white cabbage salad, and a fish soup for the hungry ones to start with.

Złota Wydma is a real oasis among lots of places that aim only to rip off the tourists. A great place with guaranteed quality that will never disappoint you. What’s more, it’s open all year round, so If you find yourself looking for a decent fish in February – that’s the place to go! 🙂 ENJOY!
