London… I finally managed to get here! Łukasz has been here many times, worked on a work&travel programme (also known as a “dish washing trip”) ages ago, then came here to have some fun and on business. How about me? Until now I only checked in at the airports during flight transfers (especially on cheap Luton). The only time that London was actually close, the trip didn’t work out as it is not recommended to fly in the first trimester of the pregnancy! Therefore Łukasz flew with his parents and I stayed at home.. But as you can see all is not lost that is delayed!

London. Here I am. Finally. One day only…! We got invited to London by Visit Britain along with a large group of bloggers from all around the world. Some write about film, some about literature, fashion, shopping or food… I guess that I don’t have to tell you which group we belong to! 🙂

Our plan includes not only London but also Bleinheim Palace, picturesque Cotswold, English sweets in The Pudding Club and lots of other attractions!

In London itself we managed to visit Warner Bros Studio (and we’ll surely “take” you there with us in the future because the set for Harry Potter movies is really amazing!), hang out around the Tower Bridge, eat dim sum in dim t (that was our initiative!), sleep in amazing Cheval Three Quays apartments and… visit Borough Market in the morning.

I’ll be honest with you, we love such places!

Borough Market, London

perfect place to go shopping and have breakfast

And that’s where we’re taking you today! 🙂

I guess I can say that Borough Market is an absolute must for every culinary freak, for every foodie and for everybody who love to eat good things! It’s the most popular and the oldest marketplace in London. They say that it dates back to the beginning of XI century when people used to trade crops, vegetables and fish in the London Bridge area. In XIII century the marketplace was moved to Borough High Street and that’s where it is now.

As the products here are high quality many well known chefs visit Borough Market to do their shopping. Supposedly you can see Jamie Olivier or Gordon Ramsay walking around the stands! Unfortunately we didn’t see anybody famous. But we loved Borough Market anyway…

We were enchanted by its colourfulness, the scents in the air and the diversity of products sold here… Lively vegetables and fruits, different kinds of tomatoes that look like they’re asking you to take them home! Intensive scent coming from big cheese rings, Spanish sausages, Turkish delight baklava and huge pans with paella or Asian seafood. Fresh fish, oysters, seafood on ice… Spicy prune or apple chutneys in jars, truffle spreads.. Crispy bread, foccacia with tomatoes and rosemary or peppers. Burgers, beef sandwiches, sweets, jelly beans… Everything! Something for everybody! It makes you wanna buy, buy and buy and then eat, eat and eat!

The most impressing thing is the culinary culture mix on Borough Market. It reflects the diversity of London and proves that the melting pot provides a cuisine diversity where EVERYBODY can find something that they like. It’s hard to decide on anything while you’re walking among the stands! Everything looks so delicious! Indian, Italian, Thai, Spanish, Arabic, Croatian, Balkan, Turkish, Argentinean… It’s such a pity that we only spent one day here!

maybe a paella?

A perfect start of the day. Especially on weekend.. If we only could, we would pay a visit every week! 🙂 From all the specialties with a label “Eat me!” we decided to go for a tasty looking colourful foccacia with capsicum and chilli (3 pounds) – it was delicious, nutritious and it had great aroma. I kept nibbling on it for half a day! Łukasz went for a sandwich with chopped beef, a cucumber and mustard (approx. 3 pounds). The sandwich was a bit disappointing, we expected something better. But if you like beef prepared this way, you should be satisfied..

It was a pity we had to leave Borough Market, but thankfully there are some places in Warsaw that offer good quality products (on a smaller scale) and the breakfasts consumed open air are also getting more and more popular. We can’t wait for the open air edition of Targ Śniadaniowy to start! After all, Żoliborz is a bit closer than London! 🙂

PS1. Write down “must” next to Borough Market before your visit to London! 🙂

PS2. The famous marketplace was featured in a few movies! 🙂 Do you know which ones? Hint: one is a women’s movie about the search for love and slimming panties 🙂

PS3. The area around Borough Market is charming too – nearby streets, cool shops, little restaurants.. I loved Chez Michele florist’s and a cheese shop in one of the nearby streets..
