Sunday. The weather is so-so, so we can’t go biking… we’ve slept a bit too long after a Saturday night out (Maks is at his Granny’s! Yeah!), so we have no plans, no schedule and no dinner. We can always find something for Mr. Maks, but what about us??!!?? And then Mamma Marietta came to my mind –it’s quite close to our place and we’ve never been there, and Italian food is good for us and for Maks as the boy would kill for noodles 😉
So, let’s go! We’ve heard a little about Mamma Marietta – interestingly, both good and bad opinions on the radio and on the net. We just have to find out for ourselves. Let’s do it!
Mamma Marietta is located on ul. Wołoska 74, near ul. Racławicka. You’ll see it right away: in summer the tables outside encourage guests to come in. The only problem is parking, but we manage to find a spot. The restaurant looks modest, but usually such places have the best Italian food…
Unfortunately, there are no free tables outside when we arrive (the picture was taken when we were leaving ;)) but, on the other hand, I’m not sure I would have managed to keep Maks from running towards the near-by Wołoska. There are no free tables inside either. The staff offers us a table in the backyard – they have a not too elegant mini “balcony” with 3 additional tables. The surrounding, typically for the good old Mokotów consists of trash bins, tyre flowerbeds, birdfeeder, pigeons and some parked cars. Maks is happy – he can chase birds, and this has lately been one of his favourite games. So, we decide to sit down and start choosing our courses! 🙂
Obviously we start with starters – we justify our culinary folly with the fact that it’s a Sunday dinner 🙂 We both go for mozzarella – I choose Bufala e Parma, or mozzarella with Parma ham (PLN 28), Łukasz chooses the handmade Burrata Pugliese with cherry tomatoes and basil pesto (PLN 30). I must admit that my expectations are high – bufala with Parma ham was my standard dish during our trip around the southern Italy and I’d love to have it once more… The starter that you can admire at the top of this post is delicious and, honestly… I can’t wait to return to Mamma Marietta just to taste their bufala again! Łukasz is similarly delighted with his burrata.
We’re both eating like crazy! Unfortunately, Maks doesn’t sit for even a second and keeps chasing pigeons – this wouldn’t be a problem but the backyard is open and he can run towards Wołoska in a flash of light. He’s too big to sit calmly in his highchair, although Mamma Marietta is equipped in them – a piece of information of those who have smaller and calmer children 😉
What’s next? Pasta, pizza or a main course? We love pasta (I also love pizza but I’ve had some recently), so we focus on this part of the menu – there is a variety of pastas and almost all of them sound interesting! We won’t find a boring Carbonara, Arrabiata or a Bolognese. Instead, there’s Tagliatelle al Pomodoro Crudo e Trota Affumicata (PLN 30) – tagliatelle with tomatoes and smoked trout (it’s tempting!), Gnocchi di Marietta (PLN 37) with courgette, shrimps and fresh tomatoes, or lasagne with salmon, mascarpone and courgette (PLN 30). There’s also a shrimp risotto (PLN 35). We decide to go with Rigatoni alla Catanese (PLN 30) with cherry tomatoes, aubergine and ricotta salata, and with Raviolini neri con Aragosta (PLN 45) – black ravioli stuffed with lobster.
I’ve got only one thing to say: it was absolutely delicious. If only I could eat a bit more of my rigatoni – Maks loved it so much that I mostly had some aubergine and ricotta. It’s a tasty combination, by the way – we’ve discovered it in south Italy, in Positano. Łukasz’s ravioli was also excellent! Because Maks attacked my rigatoni, I yearn for more and decide to gratify myself with desert – we go with the classic: panna cotta (PLN 17) and tiramisu (PLN 20). Panna cotta is dressed in fruits, raspberry sauce; tiramisu is tasty but we disagree about the over-dried biscuits – Łukasz likes them and I prefer biscuits that are soaking, almost falling into pieces in my mouth 🙂
To sum up: it was delightful and we’re definitely coming back! Maybe for lunch? It’s not the most comfortable place to go with a two-year-old who’s filled with energy – it’s not spacey enough! However, I’m sure that Maks would always find something suitable to eat in Mamma Marietta 🙂 And we have to try their pizza… and other pastas… and chocolate soufflé (yes, they have it, PLN 20)… and to enjoy bufala and burrata once more!
