{"id":16996,"date":"2015-10-05T09:50:47","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T07:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tasteaway.pl\/en\/?p=16996"},"modified":"2018-06-06T10:26:20","modified_gmt":"2018-06-06T08:26:20","slug":"sopot-legends-bulaj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tasteaway.pl\/en\/2015\/10\/05\/sopot-legends-bulaj\/","title":{"rendered":"Sopot Legends: BULAJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I guess everybody who comes to Sopot and expects to find something more than a fried fish in a random bar, a waffle by the pier and do some trendy partying on Monciak boulevard must have heard about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bulaj.pl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bulaj<\/a><\/strong>. We also heard about it but I&#8217;ve never been there &#8211; there have always been so many places to eat in Tricity and one not-so-successful encounter \u0141ukasz had with the place had discouraged us quite successfully. This time we decided to face the legend once again and see if it&#8217;s any good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We arrived in <strong>Bulaj<\/strong> on Sunday in lunchtime. We booked our table a bit earlier. Be sure to do it!!! The first good thing about the place is the fact that it&#8217;s near the beach. We&#8217;re coming with Maks and he&#8217;ll have some time to play in the sand and run around while we wait for our food. The place itself is a bit surprising. I guess that after I heard all the stuff about it, I expected a really elegant restaurant. Instead, I get white and blue chequered tablecloths, folding beds and a lot of people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We go through the menu. It&#8217;s short and definitely fish-oriented &#8211; we&#8217;re at the sea, aren&#8217;t we!? Don&#8217;t worry though &#8211; if one of you is not a fish lover there&#8217;s a homemade sour-rye soup, goat&#8217;s cheese salad, goose breast, pork knuckle, a duck and a rabbit. But whenever we get to the sea, we eat fish. We start with <strong>cod tartare (PLN 27) <\/strong> and <strong> perch-pike roe on a tortilla and pepper paste (PLN 28)<\/strong>. The only difficult thing is finding a meal for Maks &#8211; kids&#8217; menu only includes a cod which Maks isn&#8217;t a big fan of. In the end we decide on a the soup of the day &#8211; a <strong>cucumber soup<\/strong> (PLN 16).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20590\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20590\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC_7284-640x427.jpg\" alt=\"cod tartare, Bulaj, Sopot, Tricity, where to eat in Tricity\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">cod tartare &#8211; PLN 27<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cod tartare tastes great &#8211; the fish is meaty and its flavour is nicely PRZE\u0141AMANY with pieces of orange and oyster sauce which gives the meal a bit of an Asian feel. The roe is not so good though &#8211; the meal is rather dull, boring and the ingredients seem to be coming from completely different places. The cucumber soup would&#8217;ve gotten good notes if it wasn&#8217;t for Maks on the jury. He didn&#8217;t like it very much but it was still a proper homemade soup &#8211; full of ingredients, with meat stock base, strong aroma and &#8211; quite interestingly &#8211; served with groats instead of potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As for main courses, all fish meals sound tempting and appetising. As a sworn flounder fan I&#8217;m thinking about <strong>a flounder with green beans, olives, confit garlic and young potatoes (PLN 42)<\/strong> initially but in the end we decide o go for a <strong>halibut with aubergine, courgette, vegetable cabbage rolls and concasse tomatoes (PLN 54)<\/strong> and <strong> a perch-pike with a barley groats &#8216;risotto&#8217; with mushrooms, served with Hollandaise sauce (PLN 56)<\/strong> thanks to waitress&#8217; recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20591\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20591\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC_7287-640x427.jpg\" alt=\"halibut, Bulaj, Sopot, Tricity, where to eat in Sopot\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">halibut with aubergine, courgette, vegetable cabbage rolls and concasse tomatoes (PLN 54)<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_20592\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20592\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC_7286-640x427.jpg\" alt=\"risotto, perch-pike, Bulaj, Sopot, Tricity, where to eat in Sopot\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20592\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">perch-pike with a barley groats &#8216;risotto&#8217; with mushrooms, served with Hollandaise sauce &#8211; PLN 56<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Both meals are surely tasty and properly done. My halibut is firm and tastes like fish. The vegetables are soft and delicate, but I get the feeling that the flavour of tomatoes &#8211; both the cherry ones and the sundried ones kills the halibut flavour a little bit and makes it look a bit less important. Same story with the perch-pike &#8211; it&#8217;s tasty and properly done but the mushroom flavour of risotto and the Hollandaise sauce sabotage the main player a little bit. We prefer the fish to be playing the leading role by the sea and the sides not to overshadow it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After the starters and the fish we&#8217;re not planning on eating the dessert &#8211; we&#8217;re full and we still have to have a waffle. Anyway, the dessert section is not too interesting &#8211; a meringue cake, a chocolate souffl\u00e9 and the dessert of the day which happens to be a cheesecake. Boring and simple. However the waitress who serves our table persuades us to try the meringue cake. I guess she can persuade us to order anything &#8211; positively speaking. We get a <strong>meringue cake with Irish cream and thick strawberry sauce (PLN 15)<\/strong>. It may not look that spectacular but it deserves a round of applause for how it&#8217;s made and how it tastes!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20593\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20593\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/DSC_7288-640x427.jpg\" alt=\"Bulaj, merigue cake, Sopot, Tricity\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">meringue cake at Bulaj &#8211; PLN 15<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The meringue cake is the last thing we&#8217;re having at Bulaj. Maks is more than happy to run to the beach and we wonder what to do with this Bulaj place. Was it tasty? It sure was! Is it worth it? It is. Is it amazing, mind-blowing and good enough to get on our list of favourite restaurants? I guess Targ Rybny still remains our favourite while Malika remains the most fascinating option. Unless thing change tomorrow \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s one more thing about Bulaj &#8211; they have the best waitress by the Baltic sea on board! We have never seen a thing like that before: one girl serving 5-6 tables with at least 4 people at each of them. Talks with everybody, advices everybody and persuades all the customers. She asks how does the food taste and it looks like it&#8217;s not just something she repeats the same way all the time. She worries that Maks has not finished his soup. Wow! It must be the first time that we write a whole paragraph about a staff member. She earned it! If you have good sight, you&#8217;ll notice that there&#8217;s &#8216;BLOGGER&#8217; written on the receipt. We noticed it too, but only when I went through the pictures working on the review. I&#8217;ll be honest with you, I haven&#8217;t been so astonished for a while! We both looked at the receipt and wondered what happened there. I mean, we obviously came with a camera and took some pictures, but we didn&#8217;t let anybody know that we&#8217;re coming, nothing about the blog, nothing about Tasteaway. Even the picture of the super-friendly waitress we took in the end was made without making our intentions clear. Bulaj must have some kind of blogger database \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>PS2. The waitress served us and all the other tables around us the same way.
