When we travelled through northern Scotland<\/a> you kept telling us on Facebook that we should absolutely and definitely see the Isle of Skye<\/strong>. We didn’t plan it but plans can always be changed \ud83d\ude42 We didn’t plan the North either and we were supposed to spend the weekend in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Instead, on Saturday we watched seals and ate the best bread & butter pudding<\/em> ever in tiny Plockton<\/strong> while on Sunday, we woke up in Portree<\/strong> already on the Isle of Skye<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There’s a lot of islands in Scotland, reportedly as many as 800 from which 100 are inhabited! Skye is one of the biggest of them and definitely the most well known one.<\/strong> Also, there’s no need to take a ferry to get there since in Kyle of Lochlash, there’s a bridge called Skye Bridge which will take you there. The bridge was finished in 1995 and for 10 years it was the most expensive bridge in Europe: to drive through it, you had to pay as much as for a ferry ticket from Kyle of Lochlash to Kyleakin. They gave up on the toll in 2004 so if you’re travelling by car, reaching Skye won’t be a problem.<\/p>\n

From stories we heard and from the guide, we know that Isle of Skye<\/strong> is a perfect place for fans of hiking and wondering in the mountain. It’s amazingly beautiful and the landscapes are breathtaking! Unfortunately, we only spent one day on Skye, since we had to fly back to Poland on the next day.<\/p>\n

We stayed in Portree<\/strong> on Skye as it’s the biggest city there (still tiny;)) with best accommodation facilities. This time, it’s better not to follow our example and book accommodation in advance. We managed to find a little cosy room close to the harbour but in most of the hotels and bed&breakfasts we only heard ‘sorry, fully booked’. The prices aren’t attractive either – a regular room with a tiny bathroom in B&B costs at least 70 pounds in October. Portree<\/strong> is worth it though – it’s a charming town, a tiny harbour surrounded by colourful houses, you can have fish and seafood for dinner and watch the fishermen work in the morning. We found it hard to drag Maks away as he was so interested in watching the fishermen sort velvet crabs<\/em>! People say that Portree is one of the most beautiful harbours in the whole Scotland and after visiting it, we can’t say it isn’t.<\/p>\n

On Sunday morning, we left Portree for the North of the island. The views on the road were amazing, even though we tend to be hard to satisfy after our trip to the North of Scotland and the tourists on Skye were quite irritating too. There weren’t that many of them, but in the North there was NOBODY. Just us and the sheep \ud83d\ude42 We drove towards Kilmuir<\/strong>, where the Museum of life on Skye<\/strong> is – a small open air museum with traditional Scottish blackhouses<\/em> depicting the life on the island in 19th century. Around Kilmuir, you can also find remains of early Celtic churches such as St. Mary’s Church.<\/p>\n

The trip took us more than we expected, because every now and then we stopped to take some pictures! Especially of the long-haired Scottish cows we finally found!<\/p>\n

Fans of castles can also see < strong>Dunvegan Castle on Skye. We decided to see Eilean Donan castle<\/strong> on that day and we had to give that one a pass! You can also visit Talisker distillery<\/strong> and eat some tasty oysters nearby. Unfortunately both oysters and the distillery were closed on Sunday. Think about it planning your trip!<\/p>\n

It’s a pity we didn’t have enough time to walk around Quiraing<\/strong> on Trotternish peninsula. While most of the terrains on Skye require skills and may be difficult for a family with little child, Quiraing is supposed to be moderately easy and it allows you to see some amazing rock formations. The path is 7 km long and it takes you 3-4 hours to walk it. I mark it for our next trip to Scotland! You already know that we absolutely recommend Scotland and treat it as our biggest discovery of the year! Same goes for Isle of Skye. When you’re in Scotland, the island is a must see. And I guess that it’s best to spend 2-3 days on it in order to hike around in peace and see everything… Here are some more views to convince the ones that are still in doubt \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n
