I deeply believe in something I\u2019ve once heard while celebrating women\u2019s day, or in some other lovely circumstances: it\u2019s better to end your life with a chocolate in one hand and a glass of wine in the other, while your organism is a bit worn out, but also with a big smile on your face and an unmentionable exclamation of delight! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>I will also continue to praise another famous theory that states: if chocolate is made of theobroma cacao, and theobroma is a tree, and a tree is a plant, than chocolate should be classified as a salad. I don\u2019t know about you but I have my little \u201csalad\u201d almost every day \u2013 and I\u2019m not going to stop, I just might turn on the workout routine by a fitness coach Ewa Chodakowska in order to make room for the future salads \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>So, in the mood of \u201cnot restraining from pleasures\u201d, take your Saturday coffee \/ tea, with a cake and join us for our subjective take on the German sweets available to try on Christmas fairs, and in other occasions. I call it a subjective take predominantly because we didn\u2019t manage to try everything during our short journey, and so we couldn\u2019t have conducted a more profound research \ud83d\ude42 So, let\u2019s start with sweets available on Christmas markets!<\/p>\n<p><b>1) <\/b><b>GINGERBREAD AND FR\u00dcCHTEBROT<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12342\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/pi\u0119knie-zdobione-pierniki.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12342\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12342\" src=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/pi\u0119knie-zdobione-pierniki-640x425.jpg\" alt=\"pi\u0119knie zdobione pierniki - \u015bwietna dekoracja \/ beautifully decorated gingerbread - a great accessory\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">beautifully decorated gingerbread &#8211; a great accessory<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There are plenty of gingerbreads on Christmas stalls! We bought the colourful, decorated, heart-shaped ones during Oktoberfest \u2013 they serves as a great home decoration or as a small present for a friend, or family member.<\/p>\n<p>You can find small and large gingerbreads with icing, or chocolate, and our favourite <b>fr\u00fcchtebrot <\/b>\u2013 Christmas dried fruit bread. You can buy fr\u00fcchtebrot in various sizes, and if you don\u2019t know that you\u2019re going to like it \u2013 get a thick slice for \u20ac1 or \u20ac1.5 and just taste it. The bread contains i.e. nuts, apricots, dates, and figs. It tastes deliciously! And although it has plenty of calories, at least you feel like you\u2019re having a quite healthy desert!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12343\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/pierniki.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12343\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12343\" src=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/pierniki-640x425.jpg\" alt=\"pierniki, jarmarki \u015bwi\u0105teczne, niemcy, gingerbread, Christmas fairs, Germany\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toru\u0144 is not the only one famous for gingerbread<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_12344\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bakaliowe-fruchtebrot1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12344\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12344\" src=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/bakaliowe-fruchtebrot1-640x425.jpg\" alt=\"bakaliowe fruchtebrot, jarmarki \u015bwi\u0105teczzne, Niemcy, fruchtebrot with dried fruits and nuts, Christmas fairs, Germany\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12344\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">fruchtebrot with dried fruits and nuts<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>2) MARZIPAN<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When I think of marzipans, I usually think of my mom\u2019s childhood friend who has been living in Germany for many years. Because, almost every time she brought us something from Germany, it was a variation on marzipan. It could be small, large, covered in chocolate, or maybe in the shape of thalers with Mozart on the wrapper? I used to love marzipan, especially the delicious so-called marzipan potatoes (marzipankartoffeln). Afterwards, I got over it and forgot about it for a very long time! However, it\u2019s worth returning to marzipan when your are in Germany, especially that they have entire stalls specializing in marzipan delicacies combined with chocolate, nougat and many other bee\u2019s knees!<\/p>\n<p>We chose a bag of small marzipan potatoes, left the market, ate 5 of them or so, and returned for 2 more bags\u2026 For a present, because they were so delicious! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12345\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/kartofelki-marcepanowe.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12345\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12345\" src=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/kartofelki-marcepanowe-640x425.jpg\" alt=\"kartofelki marcepanowe, macepan, jarmarki \u015bwi\u0105teczne, Niemcy, marzipan potatoes, marzipan, Christmas fairs, Germany \" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">marzipan potatoes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>3) STOLLEN or STRIEZEL<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>Stollen <\/i>or <i>striezel <\/i>cake is a heavy yeast cake prepared specially for Christmas and deriving from Dresden \u2013 that\u2019s where the name of the Dresden Christmas fair derives from \u2013 <b>Striezelmarkt. <\/b>Traditionally, the cake contains dried fruits and is prepared a few weeks before Christmas. Afterwards it\u2019s covered with butter and sprinkled with a thick layer of caster sugar. Indeed, it is heavy and rather filling but it\u2019s worth trying!<\/p>\n<p>We bought a small piece of <i>stolen <\/i>to bring back home, not only because of the taste and to bring something new to the Christmas table, but mainly because \u0141ukasz\u2019s parents used to live in Dresden a long time ago when \u0141ukasz was little, and they still remember the taste of <i>striezel. <\/i>During this Christmas it will bring back the memory of the past holidays \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12347\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/striezel.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12347\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12347\" src=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/striezel-640x425.jpg\" alt=\"striezel, stollen, jarmarki \u015bwi\u0105teczne, Niemcy, Christmas fairs, Germany\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">choose your striezel<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>4) KR\u00c4PPELCHEN<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When we got to Leipzig and took a walk around the city centre I was instantly fascinated by the content of the omnipresent paper bags resembling the bags used for chips. It turned out that they contained <strong><i>kr\u00e4ppelchen<\/i><\/strong> &#8211; small donuts covered with caster sugar. They reminded me a little of another delicacy that we used to have not so long ago on the streets of Chinatown in Bangkok \u2013 however, in Thailand they were covered with coconut sauce, and here they were covered with the homey caster sugar. To be honest, they weren\u2019t so spectacular, but they are quite popular in Leipzig \u2013 it\u2019s probably connected with the fact that many people associate them with the taste of their childhood \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12348\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ma\u0142e-p\u0105czkuszki-krappelchen-za-2-3-lub-5-euro.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12348\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12348\" src=\"http:\/\/en.tasteaway.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ma\u0142e-p\u0105czkuszki-krappelchen-za-2-3-lub-5-euro-640x425.jpg\" alt=\"krappelchen, Lipsk, jarmarki \u015bwi\u0105teczne, Niemcy, Leipzig, Christmas fairs, Germany\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">small krappelchen donuts &#8211; for 2, 3 euro<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>5) APFELSTRUDEL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Except for sweets available from Christmas markets, there are also \u201crestaurant\u201d deserts. Of course, a German variant of our apple pie, or<strong><i>apfelstrudel<\/i><\/strong> is served in almost every restaurant and it\u2019s mandatory to try it. What I like most about it is the marvellous vanilla sauce that adds a completely new undertone to the apple pie and I adore this new flavour! Together with the so-called<strong><i>germkn\u00f6del<\/i><\/strong>, or a huge round dumpling (<i>kn\u00f6del<\/i>) stuffed with prunes, covered with vanilla sauce and sprinkled with poppy seeds \u2013 this dumpling always reminds me of Austria, but we\u2019ve also seen it in Berlin or Nuremberg, although we were too stuffed to try it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>And what about other deserts? I completely forgot about a very simple Christmas fair desert sometimes available also in Poland \u2013 fruits in chocolate \ud83d\ude42 Trivial but delicious!<\/p>\n<p>PS. 2 And what are you having for desert today?
