Sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr, preferably with hranolky (chips) and tatarska omacka (Tatar sauce)<\/b>… I guess most of us have some memories associated with all of it \ud83d\ude42 For me, <\/b>sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr brings back memories of ski trips to Czech Republic or Slovakia and a prolonged break on the ski slope for sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr and hranolky. It also reminds me of my primary school friend’s house and attempts to recreate the specialty in batter made of crushed cornflakes instead of breadcrumbs (don’t ask me how it tasted! ;))… Sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr also reminds me of a night “journey” to Czech Republic during my business trip to Bielsko-Bia\u0142a, just to eat sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr and hranolky and drink some Czech beer, buy some Kofola, Lentilky and Studentska chocolate bar with delicious jellies inside on our way back… Do you know any of those? \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

It was obvious, that during our stay in Prague<\/b>, our first lunch is going to be sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr with a pint of a local beer.<\/p>\n

The flight was quick and comfortable \u2013 Maks had a nap and I even managed to read a BOOK! A mother travelling with a child as energetic as Maks knows that it can be considered a great success. Unfortunately the sleeping child and the quick flight were all the luck we got, because Prague welcomed us with rain \u2013 a drizzle, a downpour and a storm, depending on the moment. What can you do… we packed heavily dressed Maks to the pram, bought an umbrella and off we went looking for the \u00a0LOKAL<\/a> restaurant, serving local specialties…<\/p>\n

The idea for this restaurant came from one foodspotter from Prague, \u0141ukasz asked for recommendations before we left. I hated this foodspotter while we tried to find the restaurant in heavy rain, going an indirect way (GPS!), feeling the water in my shoes and with Maks revolting and deciding to leave the pram after 40 minutes of wandering around. I was quite desperate and wanted to skip Lokal and get to the first restaurant we come upon thinking that sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr should be served everywhere in Prague… But I stayed strong and we made it!<\/p>\n

The place was large, crowded, loud, with rooms for smokers and non-smokers and a few empty reserved tables. It seemed worth it!<\/p>\n

We started to dry out slowly and studied the menu. Maks got a high chair, a colouring book and crayons \u2013 good start Lokal! We ordered the beloved sma\u017een\u00fd s\u00fdr with tatarska omacka<\/b> for starters (see it in the picture in the beginning of the post) and a local sausage with homemade mustard. Everything tasted great! And the cheese…. different than the one that I was used to \u2013 even better! So we drank our Czech beer and waited for more!<\/p>\n

We gave the main courses a lot of thought. The Czechs specialise in meat and you know that we prefer fish. But we also like good meat… so we counted on waitress’ recommendations and ordered pork schnitzel with potato salad <\/b>(\u0141ukasz) and a beef goulash with a mix of knedliki<\/b> (me). \u0141ukasz is quite radical and usually doesn’t accept pork schnitzels, but this one was so good, that it tasted almost like a veal one or a wiener schnitzel.<\/i> Maks was also satisfied and he’s a picky type as well. Goulash was also great \u2013 the meat was delicate, the sauce fantastic and the knedliki both potato and bread ones. A quintessence of the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n

Satisfied, we decided to order a dessert with an encouraging name \u2013 “traditional Czech wafer<\/b>“. It was just a small waffle roll, empty inside, with whipped cream on top. Everybody enjoyed it though and Maks even asked for more!<\/p>\n

The whole dinner (a starter, main course, beer and dessert times 2 + a glass of wine times 1 cost us 861 Czech korunas, which is around PLN 125-140. Pretty good!<\/p>\n

The afternoon would have been really nice if it wasn’t for a taxi we caught in the rain with a driver that cheated us (look out!)…<\/p>\n

So if you’re in Prague, be sure to visit Lokal Dlouha (there’s a few Lokals, but we can’t vouch for the others). We’re counting on the weather tomorrow as we want to go and have a walk and do some sightseeing. As for food, our tables are already booked \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n
