It’s going to be one of those unplanned posts. An accidental visit, no camera, pictures taken with an iphone. We rarely do such posts since usually when we go ‘for a review’ we come fully equipped – camera, lens, often a lamp as well. This time we had no plans to write a review since we’ve already been in Thaisty before and wrote about it. However, back then we came to Thaisty during the Restaurant Week and I had the feeling that we didn’t get to know with them enough… And after we heard out Thailand-loving friends reporting that Thaisty serves food that tastes exactly like in Thailand and that they even have ‘morning glory; we knew we had to go and try more than during our first visit.
We arrived on Plac Bankowy on Saturday at 5 pm. A late lunch rather than a dinner – you might expect the restaurant to be not so crowded. Wrong! Large interior is full of people, loud and noisy. There’s just a few unoccupied tables, most of them reserved. Fortunately we manage to find a small one for us. So keep that in mind: booking is necessary! Especially if you’re coming in a large group or expect a quiet spot on the side.
We take a look at ‘September in Thaisty’ menu and quickly know that one of the starters we will order will be plah joh – fried fish rolls with dried tofu, roast Thai basil and sweet chili sauce (PLN 21). Vegerolls look tempting too, but ultimately we go for steamed dumplings with ground pork and shrimps(PLN 20). Maks will obviously test chicken satay (PLN 18) which he fell in love with in Bangkok when he was 1.5 years old; he still loves it.

Fish rolls are definitely the best among the starters. Their flavour instantly reminds us of Thailand and things like fish cakes with sweet chili sauce. Fish rolls here seem even better! A bit spicy, they work great as an appetite booster. Maks loves his satays too – once again, they taste just like in Bangkok: tender meat, distinct flavour and velvet peanut sauce. The dumplings are good as well, but not as good as the rest of the starters and as the dumplings we used to eat in Asia.
We go for classics for main courses: a chicken pad thai (PLN 35) for me, a duck soup with rice noodles, duck slices and pak choi (PLN 25) for Łukasz. I recently rarely wanted to eat a pad thai but this one made me wanna change that! As soon as I see it my mind goes back to one of the Sois leaving for Sukhumwit, one of the busiest streets of Bangkok, I smell the distinct fragrance of the meat and sprinkle the noodles with peanuts and chili. This time Maks went mad for pad thai (no chili) as well. We have to come back and order it again! Duck soup was as good as in Naam Thai where we tried it for the first time. Which means very good.

After such lunch you can’t leave without trying the dessert. The dessert menu in Thaisty is a bit weird though.. Thairamisu – not sure what that is but it surely doesn’t sound encouraging: tiramisu can be found anywhere and I’m not into trying a Thai version of it. The waiter says that they also have ice cream. I ask for mango sticky rice and it turns out they do have it! Feeling even more hopeful I await another wave of joy. Again… it’s like in Bangkok!

The dessert doesn’t look that good. There’s definitely too much going on: pink rice, a strawberry here, mango there, some drops of colourful sauces. Not good at all. I prefer Thai simplicity: white and sticky rice, sliced mango and coconut milk you can pour all over it. Here, there’s definitely not enough of the coconut milk. It tastes better than I expected, mango is quite tender, milk tastes like milk but I guess I wouldn’t order this type of mango sticky rice again. The rice is really sweet and tastes of strawberries which is not a good thing imho. I just want it simple like they serve it on the streets of Chinatown in Bangkok!
The dessert was a bit disappointing but the rest made me feel content for the rest of the day because we ate something that was good and brought good memories which always boosts your mood. And when went to the bathroom with Maks and I showed him the pictures on the walls – Thai street food, Bangkok’s bazaars, Chinatown streets. Saying nothing I showed him the picture of a street in Chinatown, full of colourful Chinese banners and asked if he knows the place? ‘It’s Bangkok’ – Maks said. And yes it’s a little Bangkok in Warsaw. Just improve this mango sticky rice 😉
PS. The same evening I accidentally popped into “The Hangover Part II”! I wanna go to Thailand!!
